It is absolutely fascinating to see the tremendous growth of 3D printing companies nowadays. These companies give unimaginable power to business people to create everything they like from small jewellery to heavy replacement parts for trucks. Despite all these crazy 3d printed produce, we still continue to buy cloths off the rack. In fact the more 3d printing technology advances, the more people value handmade products.
Researchers at MIT are now developing a software that enables anyone to design their own unique knitwear, even if they have never had any experience in knitting.
The first prototype that was presented is called Neural Inverse Knitting. It can recognise patterns from photos of garments and use these patterns to create more complex knitwear. You can read more here.
The second software presented is called CADKnit. It aims to help people with no knitting or design experience to quickly customise templates by changing the size, colour, shape and any other decorative details. You can read more about the paper here.
Without any doubt this new technology will take some time to become popular, as their lead computer scientist Alexandre Kasper said: "3d printing took a while before people got used to it and actually use it for business purposes".
